Schools Out for Summer!!

Last Day of school!! One of the best days of the year around here. The kids are ready to relax from the demands of homework and honestly so am I. I'm ready to have them home with me. Usually summer is filled with baseball but our youngest decided not to play this summer. He is concentrating on Soccer. His reasoning, the coaches yelled too much in baseball, he just wanted to have fun with friends. In all reality, most of these kids will never play past high school, some will play in college but most just want to enjoy the game and their friends. But soccer is his first love anyway.

Camping will be on the calendar along with chores, reading, and multiplication facts. Hanging out with friends, ice cream, swimming, late night stargazing, gardening and catching fireflies in mason jars. I love the joys summer brings.

One thing near and dear to my heart over the summer is my summer book club.  I meet with 2 other amazing Catholic ladies who are on fire for their faith. Last year we read Born to Soar by Melissa Overmyer. We really learned a lot from each other. We haven't decided on this summer's book as of yet but I think I will start a new set of posts for the book club in case you would like to start one with your friends. It has been such a blessing to me and just something that brings me happiness and peace.

I hope your summer is one you're anticipating with joy. As we all know these summer days go so fast and our children are growing up and they will soon be leaving our nest. Take time to enjoy the blessings and moments of complete joy this summer.

Menu Planning

There have been so many posts on Menu Planning throughout the web, but if your not doing some type of menu planning I would encourage you to get on board. The faster I can move through the grocery store the better!

I usually start out with the calendar. Who is eating at home this week and on what days. What do our days look like? Are we busy waiting on sports practice to get done? Will we all be home, and a wonderful large family meal would be in order? Look at the calendar and decide which kind of meal will suit your day. Quick. Easy. Slow and Meaningful. New.

If you are like me, by now we have our go to meals but sometimes I get so burned out on the same old meals. I want some new recipes and something more healthy. Some sites I visit to get inspiration are pinterest, Allrecipes, and How Jen does it. Of course there are always the cooking shows on T.V. If any of you have sites where you find meal inspiration please share with me in the comments.

Next, I check the weekly ads for my local stores, what's on sale this week and also what do I still have in my pantry that could be used? If the store is having a good sale on something, I will stock up and possibly cook it when I'm making something else so I can freeze it for future use. I tend not to freeze a lot because I often forget about it or basically my family is large enough that we don't have much left over. Speaking of left overs, we tend to eat those for lunch the next day if we are lucky enough to have them.  I do try and buy something for lunches to be made simply so when there are no left overs, we don't resort to eating out. I always check the snacks we have on hand too, for school and home. You can't have a house full of boys and not have snacks!

I make a menu plan for supper only. We usually eat our big meal in the evening and eat simply during the day. Most of my cookbooks come from churches or schools in the area who are selling cookbooks for a fundraiser.  I have bought some healthier cookbooks but tend to rely on my old faithfuls. Why is that. Change in the kitchen is hard for me. I guess food reminds me of family and when I eat something my Mom or Grandma prepared I feel close to them. Anyone else struggle with changing up the meals that have been served for generations?

My meal plans are written on a simple sheet of paper. Days of the week, meal, and the grocery list. After I shop, I hang the list on my refrigerator so I don't forget what the plan is! I try to check it when I'm preparing the nightly meal so I can lay out anything that may need defrosted for the next day.

This simple piece of paper keeps me from going over budget most of the time and keeps me moving through the store very quickly. Good Luck with your menu plans and I encourage you to start doing them if your not already. I'm following along with The Simple Home book by Rhonda Hetzel. On her blog, She gave a great suggestion, which is to get the kids involved in menu planning. If they are picky have them help with the menu and also have them shop with you to see the prices and how much it actually costs to feed a family. This will be a valuable lesson for them. She always has great advise.

Here's a quick look at my method,

check your week
who will be home
what kind of meal
check your pantry
check the weekly ads
find meals to prepare, old favorites and new favorites
write your meal plan and grocery list
shop, put away, hang your list
prepare meal and check tomorrow's list

Little Blessings for the Weekend

Happy Saturday!!

AH! Big sigh, the weekend is here.  Here are a few things that just may bless you this week or at least put a smile on your face!

Motherhood has a beautiful impact on women athletes.

I started using this oil about a year ago and I alternate it with olive oil.

I ordered 2 t-shirts from this cute shop over Christmas and love them. 'Course, I'm a t-shirt and jeans gal.

This is what I'm drinking lately during flu season.

I really loved this book. I read it while waiting on my son at soccer practice last fall. I always remember this quote. "Just do the next right thing." I received mine from the Matthew Kelly Passion and Purpose talk I attended last fall and our Parish gave them out for free during Christmas.

You Tube channels I have been loving and watching lately.

The Best Broccoli Salad

This is my Mom's tasty broccoli salad recipe. The Parmesan cheese really makes this extra special.

Easy Tip: Buy broccoli already cut up.
Use precooked and crumbled bacon.

I hope you and your family/ friends enjoy this salad.

Happy New Year and Welcome!

WELCOME! I am excited to be blogging again. My first blog Myrtle and May was more
of a family keepsake and I decided it should be kept more private. I'm ready to begin again and make this blog more about home keeping and blessing our homes. I'm not an expert by any means but I do know how to cook, can, garden, paint, hang wallpaper, hand embroider, and I've been a parent for over 24 years. I love learning and hope to learn more from the comments (if I'm blessed enough to have someone find me) so I can try new ideas as well as sharing some of mine. I'm really looking forward to being able to stay at home with my family after 25 years working outside my home. I take care of my dear Dad who is 94 years old and lives with us, and my four kids who range in age from 24-11. Yes, my home is full. But my heart is full of love for all of them.
I'm learning more about technology each year but still have so much to grasp. Just so you know, I took my typewriter to college! So be patient with me as I figure it all out. Maybe we can learn together.
My husband and I recently purchased a 1994 motorhome and can't wait for the summer camping season to start. We will start out slowly until we get the hang of all the workings of the coach. I have to tell you that the last couple of places we've stayed, although nice, just felt dirty and worn to me. I'm having a hard time sleeping on sheets and beds where everyone else has slept. So therefore we decided to travel in a motorhome. Takin' my bed with me!
We have lived in our current home for 9 years now. It is in need of some sprucing up at the moment. So I will document that journey here as well. Nothing magazine worthy but it will end up being nice and to our budget and taste. Budget being the key word. Thanks for stopping by I hope to read your comments soon.
